The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

In 1978 I was invited to join Rotary. The objects of Rotary provided me as a Manager of the opportunity of caucusing and sharing with people with similar problems in running a business as I was having. Rotary opened doors and giving me contacts and skills that enabled me to enter into business.

Riccarton Rotary meetings (as they are today) were held over lunch on Mondays with committees meeting monthly in evenings at members homes.

The fellowship gained by working together raising money for projects that will be enhance our community and overseas was very rewarding. In 1 year alone I recall the club raising $300,000 some of which was used in Rotary’s Polio Plus campaign to eliminate Polio from the world by year 2000. This objective will be achieved in the next year or two.

Our club runs as a fund raiser the Riccarton Rotary Sunday Market that since 2002 has provided the club with nearly $2,000,000 which it has used to help others.

I invite you to join a Rotary Club - check out these websites www.riccartonmarket.co.nz and www.riccartonrotary.org.nz

Back in 1965 George Bateman was one Saturday night installing ducted for our oil fired central heating being fitted to our new home in Rosedale Invercargill. He was a very hard working self employed contractor. Come 11.15pm, sorry Keith, I have got to go, I have a sked on my radio with a fellow ham in Sweden at midnight. Can you really talk to Sweden every week?  Yes, I have been doing this for last 5 years.  Some few days later he bought round some books on how to obtain your Amateur Radio Licience.  It took me 6 months (much easier today) and then I had my first call sign ZL4KM.

Since then I have worked 216 countries and had confirmations from 168 of them. I have talked to many thousands. In competitions I have gained many awards. Some of which are NZ firsts.

At home my radio station consists of a Yaesu FT897D Transceiver and Yaesu FL2100B Linear Amplifier. For an Antenna I use a multi band Hex Beam.

My current call sign is ZL3QH. Interested? check out my radio clubs website www.chchhamradio.org.nz or our National Association website at www.nzart.org.nz

North West Hikers

Hiking and Tramping for leisure and pleasure is the slogan. I joined this club in 1998 with the idea of getting myself fitter after having had coronary heart scare. The tramping did the trick.  Every week on a Wednesday about 20 to 30 club members go for a 10km to 18km day tramp somewhere in the Canterbury area. It has been exciting exploring various walking tracks and enjoying the fellowship of others while viewing parts of the country that people rarely see.

Check out this website www.northwesthikers.co.nz and view our programme  and photos taken on our walks.

My Christian Walk

From an early age I was taught to help others as I travel along. Jesus Christ did just this. Many others down the years have done this. As a Wesleyan Methodist I have read that John Wesley did in England in the 1700’s preaching the good news of Jesus at the same time helping those in need.

I guess this probably why I have become so keen to help put in water supplies, medical centres and schools in overseas countries working through Rotary and World Vision.

Some stories in George Bryant’s book ‘Making a real difference’ are worth reading as is David Wrights book ‘How God Makes the World a Better Place’
